Drainage layers over compacted fill
Compacted granular fill is a good base material but it creates an abrupt interface between fast-draining fill and the slower-draining topsoil above it. In a heavy Hunter downpour, topsoil can become waterlogged at this interface, which is damaging to vegetable roots and encourages fungal disease.

Standard-sized fruit trees are generally not well suited to planting directly over a shallow pool fill zone. A mature apple or citrus tree has roots that will reach 1.0-1.5 metres deep within five years, which will penetrate the fill zone and potentially encounter poor subsoil material, remnant pool chemicals or, in a partial fill-in, the old pool walls.
