A diving pool or a pool with a genuine deep end presents a different removal job to a standard shallow family pool, not just a bigger one. The extra depth changes the demolition method, the excavation safety plan, the volume of spoil and backfill, and the overall timeframe, all before the pool’s surface area is even considered. A diving well concentrates a disproportionate amount of both into a small area: the well’s walls and floor are typically built thicker and more heavily reinforced than the rest of the shell, because the original design had to support a diving board’s dynamic loads and the greater hydrostatic pressure of deeper water. That means more concrete, more steel, and a harder, slower stage of demolition confined to one corner of the site.

The Demolition Challenge: Working in a Confined, Deep Space

Breaking out a diving well is typically the last and slowest part of a concrete pool demolition, for a few practical reasons:

  • Machine reach and positioning. An excavator-mounted hydraulic breaker needs to reach down into a narrowing, confined space to fracture the well’s walls and floor, which limits the angle and force that can safely be applied compared with breaking a flat, open shallow section.
  • Larger, more awkward rubble. Concrete broken out of a deep well tends to come away in larger, heavier chunks that are harder to grapple and load, slowing truck loading and sometimes requiring secondary breaking on the surface.
  • Heavier reinforcement. Diving wells were built to a higher structural specification than the rest of the shell, so more time goes into cutting free and separating reinforcing steel before the concrete can be carted for recycling.
  • Staged access. On tighter blocks, a smaller machine working through a side gate may need to make more passes to fully clear a deep well than it would on the shallow end of the same pool.

Excavation and Trench Safety at Depth

Beyond the demolition method itself, a deep pool raises genuine excavation safety considerations once the shell is broken and the hole is being cleared and prepared for backfill. Excavated faces deeper than around 1.5 metres generally require a documented assessment against safe work method statements for excavation, covering matters such as shoring, battering back the sides, or restricting entry, consistent with SafeWork NSW excavation guidance. As an indicative guide only, a genuine diving well or pronounced deep end typically adds a noticeable premium over an equivalent pool without one, reflecting the extra machine time, the heavier reinforcement, the additional truckloads and the increased backfill and compaction effort concentrated in that one section. On a standard concrete pool otherwise falling in the region’s usual $12,000-$25,000+ full removal band, a genuine diving well is one of the factors that tends to push a quote toward the top of that range or beyond, alongside access and overall pool size. An accurate figure always depends on a site inspection rather than a generic add-on percentage, because the well’s exact depth, reinforcement and access all vary.

Timeframe: Budget for Longer

A standard shallow-to-moderate depth concrete pool removal typically runs three to five days on site. A pool with a genuine diving well commonly adds one to two additional days to that timeframe, largely concentrated in the demolition and dewatering stages, with backfill and compaction also taking somewhat longer because of the extra lifts required. Is a diving well more likely to need dewatering than a shallow pool? Yes, particularly on lower-lying Hunter region blocks. The deeper the excavation goes, the more likely it is to reach groundwater, and a genuine diving well often excavates well below where a standard shallow pool’s floor sits.

Can a diving well be left in place with a partial fill-in?
