What Equipment Is Used to Remove a Pool?

Excavator sizes: 1.7t vs 5t vs 8t vs 20t

The excavator is the workhorse of a pool removal. Contractors choose the machine size based on the pool size, access constraints and preferred working method.

Most residential concrete pool removals in Newcastle and Lake Macquarie use a 5-8 tonne machine. This class has enough breakout force to crack concrete efficiently, reach to depth without unsafe overhang, and move broken material into a tipper in a reasonable time frame.

A mini-excavator (1.7-2.0 tonne) can get through a standard pedestrian gate, which makes it the go-to for tight-access jobs in inner Newcastle suburbs. The trade-off is speed: a mini-excavator may take two or three times as long on the same pool as a 5-8 tonne machine, which increases labour cost.

On sloping blocks around Lake Macquarie, a larger machine with a dozer blade can help manage spoil on the slope without the material sliding back into the excavation.

Rock breakers and hydraulic hammers

A concrete pool shell cannot be removed with a digging bucket alone. The shell must first be broken into manageable pieces. Contractors do this using a hydraulic breaker (also called a hydraulic hammer or rock breaker), which is an attachment fitted to the excavator arm in place of the bucket.

Hydraulic breakers work by delivering rapid percussive blows to the concrete, fracturing it along stress lines. On a 200 mm reinforced concrete pool wall, a breaker on a 5-8 tonne machine can work through the shell in a matter of hours.

A few things homeowners notice:

  • Noise: Breakers are significantly louder than an excavator digging alone. This is one reason noise and dust management matters on residential jobs.
  • Vibration: On older properties with piers and stumps, contractors should be aware of vibration transmission to adjacent structures. This is particularly relevant in older brick-cottage suburbs.
  • Breaker size: The breaker must be matched to the excavator size and the work at hand. An underpowered breaker on a hard shell wastes time; an oversized breaker on a compact machine can damage the carrier.

After breaking, the contractor switches back to a bucket attachment to load the broken concrete and rebar into the waiting tipper.

Dumpers, bogies and skid steers

On sites where a tipper truck cannot get close to the pool, contractors use intermediate machines to shuttle material from the excavation to the truck:

  • Dumpers (site dumpers): Small four-wheel machines with a front-tipping tub. Can carry 1-3 tonnes per load, navigate narrow paths, and travel across soft ground. Common on mid-size jobs with restricted truck access.
  • Skid steers (bobcats): Versatile, compact machines useful for clearing spoil, moving fill, and loading material from confined spaces. Often used in the backfill and levelling phase.
  • Bogie bins: Large skips or bins on wheels that sit at the pool edge and are tipped by the excavator, then towed by a small vehicle to the truck.

Not every job needs these intermediaries. On a standard open block, an excavator with good reach can load directly into a tipper parked beside the pool. The intermediary machines add cost and time but are sometimes the only solution.

Truck combinations: tipper, tandem, semi

Once the material is broken and loaded, it needs to go somewhere. The truck combination on your job depends on volume and road access:

  • Single-axle tipper (6-8 tonnes payload): Used on smaller jobs or sites where the street access cannot support heavier trucks. More loads needed for the same volume.
  • Tandem tipper (10-12 tonnes payload): The workhorse of Hunter demolition work. Can carry a full excavator bucket-load of broken concrete per trip. Common on most full concrete pool removals.
  • Semi-trailer (20-25 tonnes payload): Used on large or commercial removals where volume justifies the truck and the street can accommodate the turning radius.

Compaction plate, roller and how they choose

Once the pool void is backfilled, the fill needs to be compacted. Inadequate compaction leads to settlement, which means a sinking, uneven backyard surface months or years later.

For a pool fill-in, compaction is typically done in lifts (layers) of 150-300 mm, with each layer compacted before the next is placed. Standards Australia AS 3798 earthworks sets out the earthworks requirements your certifier will reference on the compaction inspection.

Equipment used:

  • Vibratory plate compactor (compaction plate): A small, walk-behind machine vibrating at high frequency. Suits confined areas and is the most common tool for pool backfills. Works well on granular materials.
  • Vibrating roller (walk-behind or ride-on): More effective on cohesive soils like clay. Used when the imported fill or on-site material is clay-dominant.
  • Excavator bucket tamping: In very confined areas where a separate compactor cannot reach, the excavator bucket can be used to tamp each layer. Less accurate but sometimes the only option.

The choice depends on the backfill material. Granular fill (crushed rock, road base, clean sand) compacts well with a vibratory plate. Clay-dominant fill needs a roller. Most contractors specify a fill material compatible with their compaction equipment and the site conditions.

Access: gate widths, overhead lines, driveways

Access affects every equipment decision. The three main constraints:

Gate width: The critical measurement is the narrowest point of entry to the backyard. A 1.8m gate comfortably fits a standard compact excavator (typically 1.6-1.7m wide). Anything under 1.4m starts to limit machine options significantly.

Overhead power lines: High-voltage power lines have strict no-go zones for plant and equipment. If overhead lines run close to the access path or over the pool area, the contractor may need to arrange line de-energisation or sleeving with Essential Energy, or use a low-reach machine. This is a safety requirement, not a preference.

Driveway surface and condition: Heavy machines and loaded tippers can crack or rut driveways. Most contractors use steel or rubber mats to protect the surface. If your driveway is a thin concrete slab or older pavers, raise this with the contractor at quote stage.

  • What excavator size are you planning to use, and will it fit through my gate?
  • How will you protect my driveway?
  • What is your breaking method for the shell, and how long do you expect the breaking phase to take?
  • What compaction equipment will you use for the backfill, and how many lifts do you plan?
  • Will you be getting a compaction test certificate for the finished fill?
  • Where will the concrete rubble be taken, and is it being recycled?

Can a mini-excavator remove a full concrete pool?

Yes, but it takes longer and costs more in labour. A 1.7-2.0 tonne machine lacks the breakout force of a 5-8 tonne machine, so the operator needs more passes to break and load the same volume. For a full concrete pool in a tight-access yard, expect the timeline to extend by a day or two compared with a standard-access job.

Why is one contractor’s quote so much lower than another?

Often it comes down to machine size and method. A contractor planning to use a larger machine and multiple tippers may complete the job in one efficient day. A lower quote may reflect a smaller team, fewer machines, or less experience with the specific site challenge. Ask both what machine they intend to use and how many days they estimate.

Does the excavator damage the yard during pool removal?
