What comes out of a pool: volumes & weights
Before comparing methods, it helps to understand the sheer volume of material a concrete pool generates. A typical 8m x 4m in-ground concrete pool with 200 mm walls and base holds around 12-20 cubic metres of concrete shell, plus excavated soil spoil that needs to be partly or fully removed.

The weight and volume figures matter because a standard 10-cubic-metre skip bin maxes out at around 6-8 tonnes of heavy concrete. A full concrete pool can fill 3-5 skips. That is when tipper trucks often become more practical.
When skip bins make sense
Skip bins work well in certain circumstances:
- Partial fill-in / partial removal, where only the top section of a pool shell is demolished and the volume of rubble is relatively small.
- Above-ground pool removal, where a steel or aluminium frame generates light, bulky waste rather than heavy concrete.
- Sites where truck access is restricted but a skip can be positioned in the street or driveway for the crew to load gradually.
- Smaller fibreglass pools where shell weight is low and the main waste is the cracked fibreglass shell plus equipment.
- Staged jobs where a homeowner is managing demolition themselves and filling a bin over several weekends (not recommended for concrete, but common for decking or fencing removed before a contractor arrives).
The advantage of a skip is flexibility: the bin sits on site for a set hire period, the crew loads it as they go, and the bin company collects it when ready. No large truck needs to manoeuvre around the pool area.
The disadvantage is cost per tonne at high volumes. Once you are generating more than about 8-10 tonnes of concrete rubble, skip-bin hire often becomes less cost-effective than a tipper that takes a full load in one movement.

When tipper trucks make sense
Tipper-truck haul-away is the standard method for full concrete pool removals. Here is why:
- Volume efficiency. A 10-12 tonne tandem tipper takes a full load of broken concrete in one trip, which is far more efficient than multiple skip swaps.
- Speed. An excavator with a rock breaker working alongside a tipper can move the broken shell off site within a day on most standard jobs, keeping the project on schedule.
- Cost per tonne. At large volumes, the tipping rate plus truck hire is typically lower than skip-bin hire on a per-tonne basis.
- Recycling pathways. Concrete rubble from pool demolitions is commonly crushed and recycled as road base at facilities across the Hunter region. Many tipper operators have direct relationships with recycling yards, which a random skip-bin company may not.
The NSW EPA construction and demolition waste guidelines encourage recycling of clean concrete and masonry. A good contractor will separate and recover what can be recycled rather than sending everything to landfill.

Mixed loads: why contamination costs more
Waste classification is a real cost driver. The Waste Classification Guidelines NSW require waste to be correctly classified before disposal. Pool demolition waste typically contains:
- Clean concrete and masonry (generally recyclable)
- Reinforcing steel (high recycling value at a scrap yard)

- Fibreglass material (generally landfill; not recyclable in most facilities)
- Contaminated soil (treated differently from clean fill)
- Asbestos (if present in older surrounds, must be separately managed by a licensed asbestos removalist)
If these streams are mixed in the one skip or truck, the entire load is usually classified at the most expensive waste category. A contractor who takes the time to separate reinforcing steel and clean concrete from other material may save on disposal fees and recover some value from the steel. Access, driveway protection and street permits
Both skip bins and tipper trucks need space to work, but the requirements differ:
Skip bins:
- Can often sit partly on the footpath with a council permit for footpath placement (required in most Newcastle and Lake Macquarie LGA areas).
- Light enough in most cases not to damage typical driveways if placed at the kerb.
- The skip company handles permit applications, but allow a few days’ lead time.
Tipper trucks:
- Need a clear run to the excavation area, ideally able to park and swing the tray without reversing too far.

Fibreglass shells are generally landfill. There are no widely available fibreglass recycling facilities in the Hunter as of 2026.
