Concrete vs Fibreglass Pool Removal: Which Takes Longer and Costs More?

Why Concrete and Fibreglass Are So Different to Remove

A concrete pool is a monolithic cast structure, walls, floor, and sometimes a bond beam are all poured or shotcreted in place. A fibreglass pool is a prefabricated shell, manufactured in a factory and lowered into a pre-dug excavation as a single unit.   5. Backfill and compact the excavation in layers
  6. Achieve compaction to required standards if future construction is planned

The hydraulic breaking stage is the slow, loud, expensive part of concrete pool removal. It requires significant machine time and generates the large rubble volume that drives disposal costs.

Fibreglass Pool Removal Method

Option A, Whole extraction (preferred where access allows):

  1. Drain the pool
  2. Disconnect all plumbing penetrations from outside the shell
  3. Excavate around the perimeter to free the shell from the ground
  4. Crane or excavator-lift the shell out whole
  5. Transport the whole shell to disposal (fibreglass is typically accepted at certain recyclers or landfills)
  6. Backfill and compact

Option B, Break-up in place (restricted access):

  1. Drain and disconnect
  2. Break the fibreglass shell into sections using mechanical force or cutting tools

Whole extraction is faster and cleaner when it’s possible. Break-up in place takes longer and generates more awkward waste material (fibreglass fragments), but it works in tight-access situations.

Concrete rubble from pool demolition is recycled at crushing plants into road base and aggregate, a reasonably sustainable outcome. Fibreglass is harder to recycle and typically goes to landfill, though some specialty recyclers handle fibreglass composites. The environmental profile of the two waste streams is an interesting paradox: concrete looks more wasteful but is generally more recyclable.

Partial Fill-In: Does the Same Logic Apply?

If you’re doing a partial pool removal fill-in rather than full removal, the cost and difficulty comparison changes. In a partial fill-in, the shell is left in place (top section removed or holed) and the void is filled. For a partial fill-in:
